An admissible subcategory of a triangulated category is called phantom if its Hochschild homology and Grothendieck group both vanish. The existence or non-existence of phantom subcategories, once considered pathological, is now of great interest. This talk will introduce recent developments on phantom subcategories in the bounded derived categories of smooth projective rational surfaces. This talk is based on joint work with Shihao Ma and Song Yang.
